How to Rotate Tires Yourself

fixing car tire

Whether you choose to rotate your tires yourself or have this task taken care of by a professional at Stohlman Volkswagen, it is important to keep up with regular tire rotations. Rotating your tires on a regular basis ensures the best possible traction on the roads of Vienna in addition to keeping your tires in like-new condition as long as possible. Learn the basics of tire rotation with Stohlman Volkswagen so your tires can last for miles and miles.

Why is Tire Rotation Necessary?

Tires do not always wear evenly due to our different driving habits. For example, the outside edges of the front tires could show more wear than the rear tires because of what they endure while turning. If you do not rotate your tires, they won’t wear down at the same time, so a tire replacement is needed more often.

How Often to Rotate Your Tires

For front- and rear-wheel drive vehicles, the tire rotation should be performed every 5,000-7,500 miles. This task needs to be done more often for all-wheel drive vehicles. These models should have a tire rotation every 3,000-5,000 miles. This is because each tire is actively engaged, which leads to more rapid wear and tear. It is a good idea to consult your owner’s manual to see when the manufacturer recommends a tire rotation.

Tire Rotation Patterns by Tire Position

  • FWD Tires: The front tires should move to the rear, but should stay in the same position. Switch the left and right tires that move to the front of the vehicle.
  • RWD Tires: The process should be reversed for RWD cars. Move the rear tires to the front of the car and keep them in the same position. Switch the left and right tires that move to the rear.

Rotating Your Tires

To rotate your tires at home, you will need a car jack and lug nut wrench. If you have what you need, you can start the process by following the steps provided.

  1. Use the parking brake to keep the vehicle secure.
  2. Loosen the lug nuts on all four wheels. Do not remove the lug nuts. Unscrewing them when the tire is elevated is simpler.
  3. Lift up one wheel with a car jack and place the jack stand underneath it.
  4. Take the tires off individually.
  5. Now is a good time to check tire pressure. If they are properly filled, the tires can be rotated using the correct pattern. Place the tire back onto the wheel mount and screw the lug nuts on by hand as far as you can.
  6. Lower the car from the jack stands and use the lug wrench to finish tightening the nuts. The best way to do this is to work the lug nuts diagonally from one to another in a star pattern. This ensures that they are tightened evenly. If they are tightened unevenly, it can lead to a warped brake rotor.
